Bond denied for UGA student accused of campus threat

The University of Georgia student accused of threatening violence on campus was denied bond at his first court appearance on Monday. But the 19-year-old is expected to be in court again Tuesday at a second bond hearing, according to the Clarke County Magistrate Court.
Ariel Omar Arias was arrested and charged Friday night with two felony counts of terroristic threats, a few hours after his alleged threat on social media, according to UGA police. Arias, from Lilburn, was also suspended from the university, according to police.
Although Arias allegedly told police the threat directed at the Miller Learning Center was a prank, it was no laughing matter for investigators. The busy campus building and nearby streets were evacuated for more than an hour Friday afternoon while the area was searched. Nothing suspicious was found.
Arias remained Monday in the Clarke County jail after being denied bond at his first court appearance, a spokeswoman for the Magistrate Court said. A special bond hearing has been set for 1 p.m. Tuesday.
