An 8-month-old baby riding in an improperly installed car seat was killed late Saturday in an alcohol-related, head-on crash in Smyrna, police said. The child’s father is charged with vehicular homicide.
Two other children, a 3-year-old and a 7-year-old, also were injured but were expected to recover, said Cpl. Ed Cason, a spokesman for the Smyrna police. Three adults also were injured.
The wreck occurred shortly before 11 p.m. on Windy Hill Road at South Cobb Drive. A car driven by Darren Curry, 31, crossed into the eastbound lanes and collided head-on with another vehicle, driven by Jose Diaz of Marietta.
None of the three children in Curry’s car was properly restrained in a booster seat or seat belt, police said.
Curry is the father of the 8-month-old boy who died as well as of at least one of the other children, Cason said. Police have not released the children’s names. The family lives in an unincorporated area of Cobb County.
The 3-year-old underwent surgery at WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta for abdominal injuries. The child is expected to recover, as is the 7-year-old, Cason said.
Curry also was taken to Kennestone, along with the deceased child’s mother, Wykenia Harris, 29, and Diaz, the other driver.
A dog in Curry’s car also died.
In addition to vehicular homicide, police charged Curry with driving under the influence. Authorities expect to file additional charges after they evaluate the other children’s injuries, Cason said Sunday.
