As Atlanta’s record-breaking day comes to a close, showers are expected to end the otherwise mild day.

Two weather records were broken just before 1 p.m. Temperatures reached the 70s for the eighth straight day in January, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The previous record, set Wednesday, was seven days.

Atlanta also set a new record high for Jan. 19 when it reached 70 degrees. The previous record high was 69 degrees. Temps reached a new record high of 75 degrees by 5 p.m.

Temperatures after 10 p.m. were 65 degrees in Atlanta, 58 degrees in Blairsville and 63 degrees in Griffin.

However, showers are expected to hit the metro area after midnight, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said. There is a 20 percent chance of rain Friday.

“A few rumbles of thunder are expected (Friday) with moderate rains,” he said.  Rain chances increase to 80 percent this weekend with mild temperatures.

The showers aren’t expected to bring an end to Atlanta’s streak of 70-degree highs. According to the latest forecast, metro Atlanta can expect highs in the 70s Friday.
