An elderly Athens man has been charged with killing a Waffle House waitress who was found dead last week along an Oconee County road.

Talmadge Edward Powell, 78, was booked into the county jail just after 9 a.m. Saturday and charged with murder, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office on Thursday identified the dead woman as Misty Michelle Myrick, 38, of neighboring Oglethorpe County.

Myrick’s body was found Tuesday along Simonton Bridge Road.

“The crime lab has determined that the death is a homicide,” the sheriff’s office said. Investigators have not said how Myrick died, nor have they released a motive for her death.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported Myrick had worked at several Waffle House restaurants in the Athens area.
