Delta Air Lines has canceled 130 Delta Connection flights at its Atlanta hub Monday due to Hurricane Irma, and warned that additional flight cancellations are possible.
The cancellations so far affect flights after 1 p.m. Monday
Crosswinds can make it dangerous for the smaller regional aircraft operated by Delta Connection to fly, and whether there are more cancellations will depend on factors such as wind shear and lightning, according to Delta.
Atlanta-based Delta said it will decide on additional flight cancellations early Monday morning.
Airlines have warned travelers that Hurricane Irma will disrupt flight schedules in Atlanta on Monday, and advise travelers to check their flight status.
Southwest Airlines plans to operate about half of its Atlanta flights Monday, and return to normal operations Tuesday. Dallas-based Southwest is the second-largest carrier at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Delta advises travelers scheduled to go through its Atlanta hub to change their flight schedules on the airline’s website.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is the home of the world’s largest airline hub, and flight cancellations can disrupt plans for tens of thousands of travelers.
Delta canceled its flights at nearly all Florida airports on Sunday. It is examining the possibility of resuming service Monday at airports in Florida.
Delta also canceled all of its Sunday flights in Valdosta and Albany, Ga., and is operating limited flights Sunday and Monday in Brunswick. In Savannah, it canceled all flights after 3 p.m. Sunday, with tentative plans to resume operations there Monday pending an infrastructure assessment.
Delta also warned that some of its in-flight meal and beverage services could be affected Monday. High winds could make it difficult for catering trucks to move around on the tarmac.
Both Southwest and Delta are allowing customers to make changes to their flight schedules without paying certain change fees.
Delta said it will operate a humanitarian flight to take recovery supplies to St. Thomas on Monday and return to Atlanta with 150 U.S. citizens.
