Voters overwhelmingly chose Nancy Jester to become DeKalb County's next commissioner, who won with 76 percent of the vote in Tuesday's runoff election, according to the the county's elections office.
Jester, a Republican, defeated Holmes Pyles, an independent who didn't campaign much and had never previously run for office.
Only 7 percent of voters participated in the election, with 3,954 supporting Jester and 1,259 backing Pyles. There are more than 74,000 registered voters in Jester's North DeKalb district.
Jester will represent about 140,000 residents in Brookhaven, Chamblee, Doraville, Dunwoody, Tucker and surrounding areas.
Jester will be sworn into office after the election results are certified in the coming days.
