When it comes to helping struggling homeowners, Georgia is among the nation's laggards, the AJC's Dan Chapman reports. It has yet to tap about $200 million in federal TARP money earmarked for the state in 2010.
So who did get help? Not those seeking loan modifications. The state estimated 1,000 Georgians would benefit. The actual number, as of June 30: Zero.
Those seeking help on past-due payments didn't have a lot of luck, either. The state estimated the federal money would help 5,000 people. It has helped two.
It has helped 5,146 unemployed people with mortgage subsidies as of June 30, but the state had estimated that as many as 18,300 would be helped, according to a new report to Congress.
So far, help has gone to 787 homeowners in DeKalb County, 740 in Gwinnett; 672 in Fulton; 506 in Cobb, and 362 in Clayton, along with a scattering of homeowners in other counties.
