The weather put the brakes on all the games in North Georgia for this weekend, but there were some important games that were played in the rest of the state.
Boys
Westside-Macon had a fourth-quarter spurt and defeated rival Southwest Macon 69-58 on Friday, a win that put the Patriots in second place in Region 2-AAA. Westside (16-4, 11-2) was led by sophomore Khavon Moore with 26 points and 17 rebounds. That offset a 29-point, 19-rebound performance from Southwest’s Justin Slocum.
The No. 9 Johnson-Savannah boys (14-5) are riding high. The Atom Smashers have won four straight after defeating rival Jenkins 66-59, a game they trailed 42-31 at the half. Johnson is led by guard Da’Monte Greene, who is averaging 18.5 points. Greene scored 30 points against No. 3 Jenkins, 20 in the first half. Coach Utaff Gordon’s team is also getting strong interior defense from sophomore Amanze Ngumezi, a 6-foot-7 transfer from Jenkins.
The No. 5-ranked Laney boys (18-2) have reclaimed first place in Region 3-AAA and did it with an impressive 80-60 win over No. 6 Westside-Augusta. The high-scoring Wildcats are averaging 72.5 points, with Christian Keeling (24.0 points) and Zep Jasper (20.4) leading the way. Keeling scored 22 in the win over Westside, including 13 of the team’s 22 in the third quarter when the Wildcats put the game away. Laney leads the league by a half game over Josey.
Girls
The No. 5 Beach girls (18-3) have won 11 straight after Friday’s 60-24 win over rival Savannah. The Bulldogs are doing it with defense. They allow just 36 points per game and have allowed 50 or more points just three times, all to opponents from higher classification. Beach allowed Savannah to score only two points in the first quarter
