Poll Talk: Mount Paran back on top of Class A rankings

Mount Paran Christian, the 2014 private-school champion, is back in the lead of the Class A rankings after a 4-0 start.

Room at the top of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution football rankings was made when previous No. 1 Marion County lost to Columbus 21-14 last week.
Mount Paran, ranked No. 8 in preseason, was thought to be taking a step back this season after graduating Class A players of the year Dorian Walker and Nick Sbravati from the school’s first state championship team. But another player-of-the-year threat has emerged. Taylor Trammell, a Georgia Tech baseball recruit, has rushed for 778 yards and scored 14 touchdowns, and the Eagles’ winning streak now stands at 19.
Another team making a big jump in the rankings is Stephenson in AAAAA. The Jaguars beat previously unbeaten and No. 7 Creekside 49-12 and moved to No. 7 from unranked. Creekside fell out with Glynn Academy, which lost to No. 9 Coffee. Jones County fell four spots to No. 8 after losing to No. 1 Northside-Warner Robins 36-22.
In AAA, Spalding and Sandy Creek are newly ranked, taking the places of Eastside (beaten by Jonesboro) and Eagle’s Landing (beaten by Spalding). Spalding is ranked for the first time since 2003.
Screven County and Model, both 4-0, joined the AA rankings. They replaced Vidalia (lost to McIntosh County Academy) and Macon County (lost to Fitzgerald), teams that suffered their second losses.
Lincoln County is back in the Class A rankings for the first time since midseason 2013. That was the longest absence for the school since going unranked in 1972 and 1973, before winning 11 state titles.
Clinch County, which lost to No. 4 Irwin County, dropped out.
The top game this week will be No. 4 Pace Academy at No. 8 Wesleyan in Region 6-AA. The only other games between ranked teams will be No. 3 Eagle’s Landing Christian (A) at No. 3 Woodward Academy (AAAA) and No. 6 Landmark Christian at No. 8 Central-Carroll (AAA).
