The No. 1- ranked boys and girls teams in Class AAA boys won their games on Friday night to highlight an interesting evening in the classification.
Boys
JaShawn Brooks scored 20 points and was 7-for-7 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to lead No. 1 Laney to a 72-65 win over No. 3 Butler. Butler (14-2) led by as many as 10 points in the first half before Laney came roaring back. Laney improved to 14-1 and leads Region 3-AAA with an 8-0 mark. The two teams play again on Jan. 31.
No. 9 Rutland (13-1) knocked down eight 3-pointers, four of them from Ty’lik Evans, who scored 19 in an 88-67 win over Southwest Macon. Timori Northcutt added 17 for Rutland. Southwest was led by Justin Slocum with 25 points and Mylik Parks with 21.
No. 2 Jenkins overpowered Pierce County 75-45. Jamori Bryant scored 19 for the Warriors, now 11-3.
Peach County (12-2) routed Kendrick 91-55 behind a 22-point effort by Dartavious Thompson.
Banks County got 13 points from Jordan Barnett and beat Lumpkin County 82-43. The Leopards (14-2) also got 11 points from Trevae Cain and 10 rebounds from Zac Orr.
Kyvon Davenport scored 23 points to lead East Hall (12-2) to an 89-58 win over West Hall. Triston Cooper added 18 for the Vikings, who placed four in double figures.
Girls
No. 1-ranked Kendrick held off a comeback from No. 8 Peach County to preserve a 63-59 win and extend its winning streak to 46 games. Kendrick (17-0) was led by Taylor Farley with 20, Destiny Murph with 15 and Melia Jones with 14. Peach County (11-3) got 27 points from Nausia Woolfolk, who knocked down four 3-pointers.
Dawson County’s Karlie Bearden reached the 500-rebound mark for her career and scored 11 points in an 83-43 win over Fannin County. Ashley Parker scored 18 and Sheyenne Seybolt scored 17 for the No. 2-ranked Tigers (19-0).
No. 3 Laney (13-2) got 29 points from Aliyah Collier, 13 of them in the second quarter, and defeated Butler 74-38.
Daknequa White scored 28 and Nia Johnson scored 27 to lift Washington County (10-3) to a 68-44 win over Glen Hills.
Jacqueline Anderson scored 27 points, including 15-for-15 from the free throw line, to lead Beach (12-5) to a 61-48 win over No. 7 Dodge County. Anderson also had four rebounds, two assist and two steals. Dodge County (10-2) got 19 points from Keyria Gordon. The Indians were playing without center Rachel Selph, a Mercer signee, who was out with a knee injury.
Banks County improved to 14-2 with a 52-31 win over Lumpkin County. Kaitlyn Duncan scored 17 and Abby Parks added 10 for the Leopards.
East Hall (9-6) beat West Hall 41-40 on a layup by Jenny Edwards at the buzzer.
