No. 1 Aquinas rolls
Top-ranked Aquinas made another statement Friday while its best player did the same. The Irish blasted a team from Class AAA (Glenn Hills) last week. Friday they traveled to Bogart and worked over a solid Prince Avenue Christian (0-1) team 33-18 to move to 2-0 this season. The majority of the damage was done by senior RB/WR Ruben Garnett, one of the front runners for Class A Player of the Year. Garnett, who has more than a dozen FBS offers, carried the ball 32 times for 230 yards and two touchdowns, and also had 72 receiving yards on just two catches, both touchdowns. Irish junior quarterback Liam Welch completed 6-of-7 passes for 152 yards and the two scoring strikes – 20 and 52 yards – to Garnett.
ELCA, Clinch fall to larger schools
A number of Class A schools have scheduled games against teams from higher classifications this season in an attempt to earn more Power Rating points. Two of the better Class A teams, Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy and Clinch County, were trounced by larger foes on Friday. No. 5 Clinch County (1-1) lost 28-8 at Class AA Brooks County, while No. 10 ELCA will fall out of the rankings for the first time in several seasons after a 33-3 drubbing at the hands of Class AAAA Stockbridge. It was the worst loss for the Chargers since they were blanked 34-0 by Lincoln County in the second round of the 2006 Class A state playoffs, the season before Jonathan Gess took over as head coach. It was the last season the Red Devils won a state title.
Former GISA schools go 2-1 in GHSA debut
Two schools that had been competing in the Georgia Independent Schools Association won their season debuts in the Georgia High Schools Association, while a third GISA school came up short. Stratford Academy (1-0) got three touchdowns each from Deshaun Williams and Austin Devenne to pull away from Savannah Country Day (0-2), 61-31. Tattnall Square also put up 61 points in a 61-28 win over Georgia Military. The Trojans scored a touchdown on their first play competing in the GHSA, a 62-yard run by sophomore running back J.J. Battle. Quarterback Ian Herndon added 101 yards rushing and three more scores, according to the Macon Telegraph. Meanwhile, Mount de Sales did not fare as well, getting trounced 44-10 by St. Anne-Pacelli. Viking running backs DeAndre Bowman and Keandre Ashley combined to rush for 222 yards and five touchdowns, according to the Macon Telegraph.
