Georgia Tech will complete its camp portion of the preseason this week with eight scheduled practices over the next six days, including double sessions Monday and Wednesday and a scrimmage on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets will break camp after the scrimmage and then return from the team hotel to their dormitories and apartments for the start of classes Aug. 18.
Typically, at that point, coaches will divide players between the scout teams and the “varsity,” meaning the players expected to play this season. Preparations will likely begin for the Aug. 30 season opener against Wofford next week.
If Tech’s preparations follow their history, that means this will be the final week for intensive practices specifically dedicated to working on the offensive and defensive schemes without concern for preparing for a particular opponent. Given that neither coach Paul Johnson nor defensive coordinator Ted Roof were particularly overwhelmed by what they saw in Saturday’s scrimmage – not surprisingly – the week is crucial for development.
