It’s going to be a huge year for soccer fans in Atlanta.

But before the World Cup tournament brings international attention to our city, locals can show their love for Atlanta United. The team returns to Mercedes-Benz Stadium for this season’s first home match Saturday.

The team takes on Real Salt Lake at 7:30 p.m., when tens of thousands of fans are expected to descend on the downtown Atlanta venue. An Atlanta United spokesperson said 55,000 spectators are expected to attend.

Here’s what to know ahead of the game.

Traffic and parking

Attendees should expect heavy traffic around the stadium before and after the match.

To avoid the parking hassle and expense, consider using a rideshare or MARTA.

Parking opens and tailgating starts at 3 p.m.

Those driving and parking near the stadium can book parking online to ensure a spot. Some lots have already sold out, and others range as low as $11 for spaces about 1 mile from the venue, according to the stadium’s official parking map. On the pricier end, as of Wednesday, you can reserve a spot for $72 in the Red Deck adjacent to Gate 2.

Gates open at 6 p.m., and tickets must be presented on a mobile device.

Arriving by train

To avoid the parking hassle, take MARTA.

Attendees should use the Blue and Green lines and stop at the SEC District station. The station’s west exit leading to the Red Deck is inaccessible because of construction. Passengers should enter and exit on the station’s east end near State Farm Arena, according to stadium guidance.

MARTA plans to have extra trains in service two hours before the match and after it’s over, a spokesperson said in an email to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

A shuttle train will run from Five Points station to the SEC District station. Additional MARTA staff will be on hand at those stations and Vine City to help the influx of riders.

Safety

Stadium safety rules require anything larger than a 4.5-by-6.5-inch bag to be clear to enter through security. Clear bags and backpacks cannot be bigger than 12-by-6-by-12 inches in size.

Weather

It should be warm, but bring a raincoat to the game.

Saturday’s high temperature is predicted to reach the low 80s, according to the National Weather Service’s early forecast. And while forecasters expect mostly sunny skies to start the day, there’s also about a 40% chance for showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m.
