FLOWERY BRANCH – Heading in the second week of OTAs, some adjustments to the depth chart must be made in light of the release of linebackers Prince Shembo and Derrick Malone and the signing of offensive guard Chris Chester, who inked a one-year $2.8 million contract.
Chester, 32, has played mostly at right guard.
So, it will interesting to see if he lines up at right guard or the incumbent Jon Asamoah does on Tuesday during the open OTA session. The Falcons are paying both like starters, so one of them appears set to move to the left side. A price tag of $2.8 is pretty steep for a backup so its reasonable to conclude that the Falcons view Chester as a starter.
Chester seems the logical choice since he’s been in the offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan’s system before. Last week, Mike Person was at left guard and Asamoah at right guard.
Shembo, before his arrest on felony animal cruelty charges and subsequent release from the team, was set to move out to outside linebacker.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank was involved in decision to release Shembo.
Malone was an undrafted rookie from Oregon.
