Wednesday will be the wettest day this week in North Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan.
With a 70% chance of showers and storms, there is a good chance outdoor plans could be disrupted at any point throughout the day. Monahan expects the wet weather to get rolling Wednesday morning as clusters of storms move across the Alabama border.
Those who don’t get wet this morning will have another shot this afternoon, when stronger and even severe thunderstorms are possible, he said. The silver lining? The heavy rain should not be widespread.
“Not everybody is seeing the rain. The rain will be scattered,” Monahan said. “It will comes in waves as we go through your Wednesday, and then this afternoon even some breaks of sunshine.”
According to Monahan, North Georgia should get about 6 hours of sunshine Wednesday in between the showers and clouds. The day is starting out partly to mostly cloudy, and scattered showers are likely from sunrise through midmorning, he said.
Some of the morning rain could be accompanied by thunder and lightning, Monahan said, but the better chance of a strong storm is this afternoon as temperatures rise. The projected high for Atlanta is 85 degrees.
“It will be dry for a time, but then the sun really brings up the storm energy and we’re going to see the rain and storms increase after 5 p.m. again,” he said. “Some heavy rain and storms are likely across North Georgia, and that will last into the overnight hours.”
Areas west of Atlanta are considered under a Level 1 threat of severe weather Wednesday, which is the lowest risk level out of five. Heavy rain and strong wind gusts are likely, and hail is possible.
The rain activity should come to an end overnight, setting up Thursday for drier conditions with less humidity, according to Monahan.
“Maybe you had to cancel the outdoor plans yesterday or the day before, because we had some of the storms around,” he said. “Tomorrow is your day to get it in. If you can go ahead with your outdoor plans, do it on Thursday.”
After a 30% chance of isolated storms Friday, Monahan said the weekend is setting up to be mainly dry with lows in the 60s and highs in the mid-80s each day.
