North Georgia can look forward to another big swing in temperatures Wednesday with plenty of sunshine in the forecast.

That sunshine will help the region warm up from a start in the 40s and 50s to highs in the upper 70s, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. For this time of year, temperatures typically top out in the upper 60s.

“Today is going to be another really nice day,” Monahan said. “Just a few clouds out there this morning. Those will clear out, and we’re looking at a mostly sunny day again today.”

With a start in the 50s and a projected high of 76 degrees, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan is recommending dressing in layers Wednesday.

The clouds are actually contributing to a milder start Wednesday morning. Atlanta is starting the day at 50 degrees, compared to lows in the 40s earlier this week. While it is still jacket weather, Monahan said that heavier coat needed Monday and Tuesday probably isn’t necessary this morning.

By the afternoon, you’ll want to shed those layers as Atlanta nears a projected high of 76 degrees. This week’s weather is giving fall foliage a boost, but Monahan said the best leaf displays in the city are still a few weeks away.

“That big range in temperature really helps amplify that fall color,” he said. “We’re going to get another day like that for you today.”

Temperatures are expected to drop Thursday as a cold front moves in. Monahan said the front will not bring a ton of heavy rain, but there could be a few showers around as early as Thursday morning. Rain chances will increase to 70% by the afternoon, he said.

“There could be a couple of thunderstorms mixed in,” he said. “I don’t expect anything severe but there will be some rumbles of thunder around tomorrow afternoon and into the evening commute.”

While Thursday will be more of “an inside day,” Monahan said Friday is looking great for outdoor plans. He expects a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 66 degrees, which is just about average for this time of year.

The projected high is 76 degrees Wednesday.

Weather might be smooth sailing Wednesday, but metro Atlanta traffic is anything but. The WSB 24-hour Traffic Center has sounded multiple red alerts, and the Wednesday morning drive is just getting started.

Only a left lane remains closed on I-75 South at Ga. 138 after an earlier crash that blocked all southbound lanes, but it is still a struggle leaving Morrow, the Traffic Center reported at 7 a.m.

In Fulton County, another crash was blocking multiple lanes of I-285 South past Hollowell Parkway. The Traffic Center is advising commuters to use I-75 South out of Marietta instead.
