Wednesday could be the hottest day so far this year in Atlanta, but it won’t hold that title for very long.
A projected high of 90 degrees could be quickly surpassed Thursday with a high of 93 in the forecast, according to to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Wednesday should be the first time this year the city records a high in the 90s, and Monahan said it will be a dry heat.
“Today is not especially humid or muggy,” he said. “Tomorrow, you’re going to notice the difference. It’s going to be a little sticky around here by Thursday, and then rain and storms return for the weekend.”
Atlanta typically records its first 90-degree day by May 31. The earliest the city has ever reached the 90s was April 23, 1980, and the latest was July 28, 1961, according to Channel 2.

With lots of sunshine in the forecast Wednesday, Monahan expects temperatures to rise quickly. The region is off to a comfortable start with lows in the 50s and 60s, and the heat will really get rolling this afternoon with very little in the way of cloud cover.
North Georgia typically gets about 14 hours of daylight this time of year, and all of them will be sunny, Monahan said.
There could be less sunshine Thursday afternoon with a 20% chance of a thunderstorm in the mountains, he said. Widespread rain should hold off until this weekend, with rain and storms 30% likely Saturday and 70% likely Sunday, according to the latest forecast.
While it has been a dry May so far, Monahan said rainfall totals are actually above average going back to March 1. He expects Atlanta will be able to catch up on the May rain this weekend.
