Storms dumping inches of rain over parts of North Georgia will eventually clear out Wednesday morning, but more wet weather is on the way for the afternoon.
According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, the region will get about an eight-hour break to enjoy the sunshine, just enough time for heat to build before storms bubble up again after lunch Wednesday. Atlanta’s projected high is a balmy 86 degrees.
“It stays warm and steamy through the day,” Monahan said. “Even though we’ve got the rain in the forecast, we’ll be up in the mid- to upper 80s a little later on today.”
While the northwest Atlanta suburbs are beginning to dry out, the morning drive is off to a wet start east of the city. One particular slow-moving thunderstorm dumped inches of rain over parts of North Fulton and Gwinnett counties before continuing east, Monahan said.
More than 2 inches of rain have fallen in parts of Alpharetta, and 1.5 inches of rainfall was recorded in Roswell on Wednesday morning. A flood warning was issued for parts of Forsyth and Fulton counties near Big Creek, which was nearing flood stage of 7 feet at 7:15 a.m.
“Flooding starts to effect portions of the Big Creek Greenway near Alpharetta and some portions may become closed with around 1 foot of water, especially upstream and downstream from the gage on Kimball Bridge Road and near Rock Mill Park,” the Weather Service said in an alert. “Portions of the YMCA Campground off Preston Ridge Road will begin to flood.”
Monahan said standing water is likely on roads. After about sunrise, he said most of the morning rain should wrap up.
“As we go through the day, we’re going to watch a weak cold front come in,” Monahan said. “By 10 a.m., it will be dry, partly cloudy, and the heat will be building across North Georgia ... By early this afternoon, we’re going to see some new storms pop up across the area.”
Conditions should be much drier Thursday, which will contribute to even warmer weather. Thursday’s projected high is 88 degrees for Atlanta.
Rain returns to the forecast Friday, when showers and storms are 80% likely, according to Channel 2.
