A heavy coat will be needed until 10 a.m., but Atlanta will be much milder this afternoon and evening for those voting in the runoff election, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Those headed to the polls early Tuesday morning might want to grab a heavy coat.

Temperatures are in the 20s outside the Perimeter and in the 30s in town, where Atlanta voters will elect the city’s 61st mayor. According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, those numbers will rise quickly, reaching a mild 64 degrees by early Tuesday afternoon.

By the end of the week, Monahan said Atlanta will leave temperatures near freezing behind in favor of record high heat.

“Seventy degrees is coming right around the corner,” he said. “We are going to start December really warm across North Georgia, but we are finishing this last morning of November on a cold note.”

Plenty of sunshine in the forecast Tuesday will help the city to warm into 50s by lunchtime, he said. North Georgia typically gets about 10 hours of daylight this time of year, and both Tuesday and Thursday will get the full allotment, according to Monahan.

“In between, we’ll add a few more clouds on Wednesday, but still pretty nice,” he said.

With an area of high pressure firmly in place, there is no rain in the forecast all the way through the weekend. On Friday, a projected high of 74 degrees could tie the record set in 2012. Highs are typically in the upper 50s at the start of December.

Tuesday's projected high is 64 degrees.
