The countdown is on to the official start of fall, but North Georgia weather is stuck in a summertime pattern.

The region on Tuesday will be hot and sticky, and there is about a 40% chance of an afternoon thunderstorm, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. With a high of 90 degrees in the forecast, Atlanta is likely to record its 55th day in the 90s so far this year.

For some perspective, there are less than 30 days until the fall equinox on Sept. 22 signals the change in seasons.

“It’s been a hot summer so far,” Monahan said. “We’ve had more than fifty 90-degree days. We average 47 in a normal, total year. But here we are at the end of August, and still some 90-degree days to go before we wrap things up for the summertime.”

Atlanta's projected high is 90 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday could be even warmer with a projected high of 91, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. The average high for this time of year is 87 degrees.

Highs in the 90s are in the forecast through midweek, he said. But Monahan said there are some changes headed this way in the form of a cold front, which will trigger rain Tuesday but drop humidity by Wednesday morning.

“We’re going to stay dry though the bus stop time this morning. We’re going to stay dry through your ride into work,” he said. “But by lunchtime we’re going to start to see some rain move into northwest Georgia.”

Monahan expects a system of showers and storms to break up as it enters metro Atlanta early Tuesday afternoon. There is still a chance for a thunderstorm to impact school dismissal, afterschool activities or even the ride home from work, he said.

The storms should wind down by 8 p.m., according to Monahan.

“Then as you are sleeping, this cold front is going to come in, and it’s going to drop our humidity by tomorrow,” he said. “With that drop in humidity, we go from the storms today to dry weather Wednesday. It looks like a good day tomorrow.”

Despite a high of 90, Atlanta won’t be as muggy Wednesday, he said, there should be plenty of sun in the sky. Another hot but comfortable day is in the forecast Thursday before rain chances increase ahead of Labor Day weekend.

By Saturday, a 60% chance of rain will mean cooler conditions in the mid-80s, according to the latest forecast.

With a projected high of 90 degrees, Tuesday will be hot and muggy, according to Channel 2 Action News. Storms are 40% likely Tuesday afternoon.
