Tuesday is going to be a wet day for North Georgia.
The region is looking at multiple rounds of rain, with the first arriving in metro Atlanta at the start of the morning commute. After scattered storms overnight, already wet roads are getting wetter, and traffic delays continue as parts of the area are stuck in the showers at midmorning.
“It’s a wet start to the day, and the rain impacts are high this morning,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said. “Leave extra time to get into work, or wherever you’re going for your Tuesday morning. It’s going to get a little drier at lunchtime, but more storms will develop for the afternoon.”
Standing water is possible on roads. Flooding was reported before daybreak on I-285 West in Dunwoody, where the left lanes were impacted at the Ashford Dunwoody Road exit at 6:30 a.m.
Monahan does not expect any severe weather in this morning’s rain, but it could be heavy at times and lightning is possible. Those looking to get in some outdoor time Tuesday could find a dry window between late morning and midafternoon, he said.
A second round of storms develops later Tuesday, with rain 70% likely “for just about everybody” between 3 and 5 p.m., according to Monahan. It won’t rain all day, he said, but when it does it will be heavy.
With the showers and clouds around, Atlanta should be slightly cooler this afternoon. The projected high for the city is 88 degrees. By sunset, the rain activity should die down and become more scattered overnight, he said.
Drier and warmer weather is in store this weekend, but Atlanta has to slush through a few more wet days first.
“By Saturday it is going to be dry,” Monahan said. “Today, tomorrow and Thursday we’ll call it a 2 out of 3 for the rain impact. No washouts, but it is going to be a little messy, a little wet at times across North Georgia.”
