There are 44 days left to go before the official start of fall, and North Georgia might just get its first taste of fall weather this weekend.

But there are four days left in the work week, and all of them could be stormy at times as a summertime pattern holds, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. Tuesday will see more of the same heat, humidity and a 40% chance of afternoon rain, he said.

“There will be some interruptions with some rain and some storms, but we’re going to have plenty of sunshine mixed in as well,” Monahan said. “Thursday is going to be a little bit of a different story.”

More widespread rain is in Thursday’s forecast, with a 70% chance of storms. Monahan expects rain to get going late Thursday morning, and by early afternoon he said “a lot of us are going to be covered in showers and storms.”

“It will be worth it though,” he said. “Friday, Saturday, into the weekend looks really good.”

A cold front moving in Friday night will signal a shift in the weather pattern, according to Monahan. Drier air will move in, dropping humidity and temperatures for Saturday morning. Atlanta could wake up to temperatures in the 60s first thing on Saturday, Monahan said.

The cooler weather won’t last long, with temperatures returning to the mid-80s for the afternoon. But Monahan said it will be drier with only isolated storms in the forecast through the weekend.

For Tuesday and the rest of the work week, plan for the rain.

“We’re OK for outdoor plans with the forecast today and tomorrow, just might have to adjust a little bit in the afternoon as some scattered, slow-moving storms pop up,” Monahan said.

With the sunshine, Atlanta is headed for a projected high of 90 degrees this afternoon. Monahan expects any rain activity to die down after sunset, setting up for a dry Wednesday morning drive before the return of storms after lunchtime.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said there is a 40% chance of storms in the forecast Tuesday and Wednesday before more widespread rain Thursday. The weekend is looking drier for metro Atlanta, he said.
