North Georgia is looking at another chance of scattered showers and storms Tuesday afternoon, and some could be strong or even severe.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said rain activity is 40% likely Tuesday and will follow a similar pattern as Monday, when slow-moving storms dumped more than an inch of rain over parts of metro Atlanta.
“Today is not a washout,” Monahan said. “There is going to be some rain and a little less sunshine than yesterday, about 8 hours of sun for your Tuesday.”
Wednesday will be the cloudiest day this week and will come with best chance of rain, he said. Plan those indoor activities for the middle of the week, because sunshine and isolated showers will return Thursday, according to the latest forecast.
“It’s going to be a little wet at times over the next few days,” Monahan said.
Inside the Perimeter, there is no rain to complicate matters at the start of the Tuesday morning drive, but there could be some patchy fog contributing to reduced visibility on the roads. In the mountains, Monahan said there is a chance of isolated storms before rain chances increase for the afternoon.
“Northwest Georgia, as you head into work this morning, you could run into a few downpours,” he said. “Much better chance for storms affecting your afternoon and evening commute.”
The thunderstorms Monday produced strong wind gusts that brought down trees and power lines all across the region. Monahan is predicting similar conditions Tuesday.
Tuesday’s storms will have heavy rain and the chance for damaging wind gusts and hail, he said. Monahan is also expecting “a ton of lightning” embedded within the storms.
The risk of severe weather is a low-end Level 1 for most of North Georgia, according to the National Weather Service.
In between the raindrops, Atlanta is expected to reach a high of 86 degrees Tuesday.
