Thursday will see metro Atlanta’s best chance of a storm this week as a cold front moves in from the north, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Showers and thunderstorms are 40% likely after lunchtime, and there is the potential some could turn severe. With the rain around, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said Thursday won’t get quite as hot as the day before.
“We’ll dial it back just a little bit. Still hot and humid, though, up to 89 for a high temperature today,” Monahan said. “The reason why it’s a little cooler? More clouds and a little better chance for showers and storm this afternoon.”
Monahan expects to see “a good scattering of showers and storms across North Georgia” as early as 1 p.m. Thursday is starting out dry but warm with lows in the mid-70s in metro Atlanta.
As the heating of the day builds, the chance for an isolated strong or severe storm increases late this afternoon into early this evening, he said.
“Our severe weather risk today, its a low-end risk, but that chance is there, especially along and north of I-85,” Monahan said. “From metro Atlanta up toward the North Georgia mountains, a Level 1 of 5 severe weather risk. These storms will have some heavy rain and some strong wind gusts, too.”
The rain should come to an end overnight, leaving behind some clouds first thing Friday morning, he said. While most of the region should stay dry to end the work week, there is a small 20% chance of a shower Friday afternoon, according to the latest forecast.
It should be slightly cooler, too. Friday’s projected high is 85 degrees, which is right on target for the beginning of June. Average temperatures and lower humidity should carry through to the weekend, Monahan said.
“Some clouds will linger tomorrow, but by Saturday we’ll be back into a partly to mostly sunny sky,” he said. “It should be a pretty nice start to the weekend.”
