Temperatures are headed to the upper 60s Monday under a sunny sky, according to Channel 2 Action News.
After a cool start in the mid-40s, Atlanta is forecast to reach a projected high of 68 degrees. Even warmer weather is in store Tuesday, and by Wednesday the city could see a high of 81 degrees, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“A nice warmup this week,” Monahan said. “Warmups usually are right before spring storms this time of year, and we’re going to see another round of strong and severe storms.”
The next round of rain and storms arrives Thursday, he said. Until then, there is no rain in the forecast to wash pollen out of the atmosphere. Pollen levels have been considered high the past few days, with a count of 402 pollen particles per cubic meter of air on Sunday, according to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, the organization that tracks the daily pollen count.
Wind is really helping to stir up the pollen, Monahan said.
“Everything was covered in yellow over the weekend as that pollen blows around North Georgia,” he said. “And with warm temperatures this week, I think we’re going to get our first days this season that are in the extreme range as we approach the middle part of the week.”
A pollen count greater than 1,500 would be considered extreme. Atlanta has yet to break into the four-digit counts this season.
On Thursday, rain should provide some relief to allergy sufferers. Monahan said the same system that will bring severe weather to parts of Mississippi and Alabama will weaken by the time it reaches Georgia, but there is still the possibility for isolated severe storms Thursday morning.
“We have a Level 1 out of five severe weather risk, mainly from Atlanta west between the early morning hours Thursday,” he said. “With heavy rain likely, there’s that chance for an isolated strong or severe storm.”
Rain is 90% likely Thursday, according to the latest forecast. Dry weather returns Friday with a projected high of 73 degrees.
