The cool autumn air that arrived over the weekend should stick around this week, contributing to chilly mornings and comfortable afternoons.

Temperatures are in the 50s in Atlanta to start Monday, but Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz expects the city will dip into the 40s by midmorning. In the mountains, where temperatures are in the mid-30s, a frost advisory is in place until 9 a.m.

There is no rain in the forecast Monday, and Nitz said there should be plenty of sunshine.

“We’re warming up nicely with that sunshine,” he said “We’ll top out today at 72 degrees. If you are heading out for a run (this afternoon), the humidity is low as well.”

Those numbers are right on target for this time of year, and fall feels like it’s finally hitting its stride. Nitz is predicting lows in the 50s all week, even though the afternoons will become gradually warmer as the week goes on. Thursday’s projected high is 76 degrees, and there are a few showers in the forecast, he said.

The bulk of the rain Thursday will stay to the west, according to Nitz. Scattered showers are 30% likely.

“The coverage is pretty limited, but still some isolated showers off and on through the day on Thursday,” he said. “Thursday night and then into Friday morning, a chance of rain. That comes and goes in time for, by late Friday, some sunshine, and that sunshine stays with us next weekend.”

Nitz said next weekend is looking dry and sunny with more lows in the 50s and afternoon highs in the low 70s.

If the cold weather is slowing you down Monday morning, WSB traffic reporter Heather Catlin said you can afford to take some time before leaving the house.

“I’ve got some good news: If you are heading to work or school in the next few minutes, things are looking good,” Catlin said at 6:30 a.m. “Go ahead and grab another cup of coffee.”

With speed-limit conditions on metro Atlanta interstates, there is no need to leave early, she said. No longstanding crashes or construction projects were causing delays at the start of the Monday morning drive, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
