Those headed back to school on Monday will want to stash an umbrella in the backpack just in case of afternoon rain.
According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, showers and storms are 40% likely around the time of school dismissal. It could get a little wet at the bus stops for students in the city of Atlanta and Cobb and Cherokee counties, who all start the new school year Monday.
“It will be a great start to the school year, a mainly dry one this morning, but later today we are going to see those storms develop,” Monahan said.
There is no rain to worry the morning commute in metro Atlanta, but a few showers are getting the northeast Georgia mountains wet before sunrise. Monahan said sprinkles and showers near Lake Blue Ridge are not in a hurry to go anywhere Monday morning.
The day is off to a comfortable start with temperatures in the 70s all across North Georgia. With thicker clouds in the mountains, Monahan is expecting highs in the mid-80s for the top half of the region, while metro Atlanta is expected to top out closer to average temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s.
The city’s projected high is 89 degrees, according to Channel 2.
“A low impact from any rain and any clouds for the most part this morning,” Monahan said. “Low impact at lunchtime, but headed home from school and work later today, storms and showers will develop. It will slow us down in spots.”
Monahan said afternoon rain will be scattered and could stick around through sunset before settling down overnight.
After a drier day Tuesday, more storms will build back into the forecast Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, he said. The week is looking wet at times with about a 40% chance of a shower or storm each day, according to the latest forecast.
