A cold front that brought strong storms to parts of North Georgia on Thursday is now sitting to the south, setting up the region for a drier and cooler weekend.
Rain chances are slim Friday, but there is still the possibility of an isolated shower or storm this afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan. He expects the mountains and the northern half of metro Atlanta to stay mainly dry.
“Southside is where we’ll have that chance for an isolated storm,” Monahan said. ”Either way, it should not be much, it should not last long, and Saturday and Sunday we’re looking at mainly dry and warm weather across North Georgia.”
Rain chances drop from 30% Friday to 10% over the weekend, according to the latest forecast. Temperatures are also on a downward trend, stepping back from the 90s Thursday into upper 80s Friday. By Sunday, Monahan is calling for a high of 85 degrees.
The front to the south is responsible for some haze and fog Friday morning, but not rain. Monahan expects any rain activity to hold off until about 5 p.m. and dry up overnight. For areas southeast of Athens, the National Weather Service considers the severe weather risk to be a low Level 1 this evening.
Mainly dry conditions should take hold for what will be a partly sunny weekend, Monahan said. There should be very low impact from isolated showers, he said, and outdoor plans are a go.
“Quiet weather Saturday and Sunday,” he said. “Better chance for some isolated showers and storms back in the forecast Monday and Tuesday.”
