What would have been a simple traffic stop ended in a six-car pileup Friday afternoon when a driver tried to elude police on the Downtown Connector, authorities said.
A black Dodge Charger was in the southbound HOV lane when Atlanta police tried to pull over the vehicle near the Langford Parkway overpass, according to the Georgia State Patrol. The driver of the Dodge took off just as traffic slowed on the busy interstate, GSP spokesperson Lt. Mark Riley said.
“As traffic came to a stop the Dodge Charger struck two vehicles and then struck three more vehicles prior to coming to a final stop,” Riley said in an emailed statement. “One of the vehicles that was struck did overturn.”
Minor injuries were reported, he said. Troopers were called about 12:15 p.m. to handle the crash investigation, which shut down multiple lanes and caused major traffic delays for more than two hours Friday.
The driver of the Charger, identified as 31-year-old Kentavious Robinson of Decatur, was arrested by Atlanta police on a slew of traffic charges, including reckless driving, speeding and fleeing or attempting to elude.
Robinson was booked into the Fulton County Jail on Friday and released the following day on a $13,500 surety bond, online records show.
