A man is dead after a collision Monday afternoon on I-85 in Gwinnett County involving a van and a tractor-trailer, police said.
Northbound traffic was backed up on the interstate at Ga. 317 after the van crashed into the back of the big rig, Suwanee police Capt. Robert Thompson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The driver of the van, identified by police as 32-year-old Jorge Zuno of Buford, died.
“The tractor-trailer was actually stopped on the right shoulder of 85. The driver had gotten out after having problems with the truck and the van drove up under the rear of the tractor-trailer,” he said.
Thompson said the van had driven onto the shoulder of the interstate when it crashed into the truck. Authorities do not know what caused Zuno to drive onto the shoulder.
Nearly three hours after the wreck, all northbound lanes of the interstate reopened to traffic while authorities continued working the crash on the shoulder.
