It was hot enough Wednesday afternoon in metro Atlanta to tie a record set in 1989, Channel 2 Action News meteorologists said.

Temperatures reached 84 degrees on a day when the average high is 68, Channel 2 reported.

Current temps are 78 degrees in Atlanta, 70 in Calhoun and 72 in LaGrange, Channel 2 reported.

Temps are expected to return to the 80s Thursday, when there is also a marginal risk for severe storms, damaging winds and lightning Thursday night into Friday morning.

Metro Atlanta faces a 30 percent rain chance Thursday and an 80 percent chance Friday, Channel 2 reported.

For allergy sufferers, the rain can’t come fast enough. For the second consecutive day, the pollen count surpassed 2,000.

There are 2,204 particles of pollen per cubic meter of air today, down from 2,587 on Monday, according to Atlanta Allergy and Asthma.
