Storms that brought heavy rain and rumbles of thunder to North Georgia overnight are on their way out Monday.
While there are some showers left behind, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said there is no risk for any more storms or severe weather for the rest of the day.
In fact, he said, North Georgia will get a break from the stormy weather for a few days. The next system is not expected until Thursday.
“Not even any thunder or lightning across North Georgia right now,” Monahan said. “Low pressure — this is what brought us the bad weather yesterday and overnight — that’s moving away pretty quickly, and with it, the sun is going to move back in.”
Monahan said the thunder overnight made the storms sound ominous, but the risk for damaging winds and tornadoes stayed in middle and south Georgia.
“It’s been kind of a cool setup for us, and that’s what’s actually kept the severe weather to our south,” he said. “We've had some stable air near the ground, and that’s just given us the heavy rain and some of those occasional long, loud rumbles of thunder.”
The heaviest rain remains in northwest Georgia on Monday morning, while showers are more scattered in metro Atlanta. It will take several hours for the last of the system to move out, Monahan said.
When it does, much brighter conditions are in store Monday afternoon.
North Georgia should be looking at a mostly cloudy sky by midday, and many of those clouds will be gone by late afternoon, according to Channel 2. Those who missed their chance to get outside Sunday should find plenty opportunities Monday.
“Yesterday, we had a lot of 50s for highs,” Monahan said. “Today, we'll be back into the 70s, about where we should be this time of year.”
Atlanta’s projected high is 73 degrees.
Monahan said the nice weather will continue Tuesday and Wednesday with a mix of sun and clouds and afternoon highs in the 70s. Another round of heavy rain is in the forecast Thursday.
“This one is going to have a little higher risk of some strong storms moving into metro Atlanta,” he said. “That would be during the day on Thursday. Beyond that we get a lot quieter.”
Friday will see another mostly sunny sky and temperatures in the mid-70s before another chance of storms moves in for the weekend, according to Channel 2.
Those hitting the road Monday morning will want to avoid the Downtown Connector.
A deadly crash investigation has shut down all northbound lanes of the connector north of Edgewood Avenue, and there are heavy delays downtown, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Two people were hit and killed on the interstate when they got out of their vehicles to survey the damage of an earlier crash, Atlanta police said. The vehicle that hit the pedestrians left the scene.
Drivers are advised to avoid the Downtown Connector and use Northside Drive or I-285 as alternates, the Traffic Center reported.
