Temperatures were creeping toward the 90s just after the AJC Peachtree Road Race wrapped up Tuesday.
The high is expected to increase from 90 to 92 degrees — a level that would make this 4th of July holiday the hottest day of the year so far, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta has only seen three days with temps in the 90s this year. Last year, that number was 25 for this time of year, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
“So we are way behind schedule there,” Monahan said.
About 5 p.m., the temperature was 90 degrees in Atlanta.
Humidity is at 55 percent, Channel 2 reported.
“It is going to be uncomfortable,” Monahan said.
So far muggy conditions have already led to a red alert and several reports of dehydration and exhaustion at the Peachtree Road Race.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain in far North Georgia and the Northside of metro Atlanta, Channel 2 reported. South of I-20, that chance drops to 20 percent.
Bartow, Cobb and Cherokee counties picked up afternoon showers and were included in a weather advisory for wind up to 50 mph, strong thunderstorms and hail, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory is expected to last through 6:44 p.m. Wednesday.
A tree was reported down on a house in the afternoon in the 3607 block of West Lawrenceville Street in Duluth, Gwinnett fire spokesman Tommy Rutledge said. One family is displaced. There were no injuries reported.
Trees also were down on houses on Devonshire Road and Whitlock Drive in Cobb County, according to Channel 2.
