Heavy rain fell in Atlanta Sunday afternoon with flooding reported on surface streets in the and around the city.

Nearly 2 inches of “torrential” rain covered Midtown in the span of about an hour,  Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Flooding slowed traffic in Sandy Springs on Ga. 400 southbound near the Glenridge Connector and about 8 inches of water flooded near the Lenox Road exit in Buckhead.

The downpours match those reported early in North Georgia, where some neighborhoods north of the metro area were pelted with heavy rain for hours Sunday morning, Monahan said.

The severe weather threat appears minimal, but there will be downpours and the potential for gusty wind.

“With the clouds and rain around it’s going to be a cooler day,” Monahan said. “We’ll be in the 80s today.”

Currently, the temperature is 79 degrees in Atlanta.

And though the downpours moved east, another wave of rain is expected later in the day.

Ahead of a front, rain chances will remain high on Monday, with some rain possible early in the day as well.

The front will clear the area into early Wednesday with decreasing clouds and lower humidity, Monahan said.

Widespread 1 to 3-inch rainfall totals are now likely across north Georgia, with locally higher amounts, through late Tuesday, Monahan said.

The end of the week will feature mainly dry, partly cloudy, and less humid weather, with highs mainly in the low to mid-80s.
