Parts of metro Atlanta could see 2 to 4 inches of rain before Wednesday, Channel 2 Action News meteorologists said.
Metro Atlanta was hammered with heavy rain earlier and during the Monday afternoon commute about 5:30 p.m., Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
The storm system was expected to dump as much as 2 inches of rain an hour in some spots.
“Notice not continuous rain,” Nitz said. “But there’ll be rain off and on right on through the afternoon into the evening hours.”
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch for all of metro Atlanta, set to go into effect at 8 p.m. It is expected to last through 2 p.m. Wednesday.
But flooding is already causing problems in some areas, such as Paradise Park, where meteorologist Brian Monahan found the park’s playground, baseball field and basketball court under several inches of water.
He described one of the baseball outfields looking more like a swampy marsh from the heavy rain.
Monahan spoke with neighbors who said they were frustrated because the park floods after every heavy rain.
Several lanes of Ga. 400 northbound were blocked by flooding in the road at Windsor Parkway Monday afternoon.
A flash flood watch means conditions are favorable for flash flooding.
“You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash flood warnings be issued,” the National Weather Service said.
A flash flood warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring.
Over the weekend, metro Atlanta picked up between 1 and 3 inches of rain.

Another downed tree fell on a Cobb County high school student who was on a camping trip in Bartow County. The teen later died.
More showers are expected to develop Monday afternoon, adding between 2 to 4 inches of rain to the weekend totals, according to Channel 2.
The rain will start to clear, making way for nice weather starting late Thursday through much of Memorial Day weekend.
Temperatures will be cool on Thursday – in the low to mid 70s – but warm toward 90 degrees over the weekend.
Currently, the temperature is 71 degrees in Atlanta.
