Heavy rain showers covered parts of metro Atlanta during rush hour and created delays Monday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Channel 2 Action News meteorologists said.

Flash flooding is an ongoing possibility as scattered storms and downpours continue throughout the evening.
A flood watch was issued for Cherokee and Hall counties and areas of northwest Georgia through 8 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

“These are tropical downpours,” Chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

The good news is that the metro area is no longer considered in a drought, Burns said. However, Lake Lanier still needs more rain.

Metro Atlanta could see an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain through Wednesday morning, Channel 2 reported.

Also, a flood warning was issued just after 10 a.m. for Chattooga County. At that time, the Chattooga River was less than an inch below the 14-foot flood stage, the NWS said. That warning is set to expire at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Currently, it’s 72 degrees in Atlanta.
