In just five days, an unwitting 7-year-old boy spent nearly $6,000 while playing a video game on his dad's iPad, according to The Telegraph.
Between Dec. 13 and Dec. 18, 60 separate payments went to iTunes from 32-year-old Mohamed Shugaa’s bank account. Shugaa’s son, Faisall, spent a total of £3,911 ($5,766) without realizing he was spending real cash, the newspaper reported.
Faisall was playing Jurassic World, a game focused on building a dinosaur park and collecting, evolving and battling different types of dinosaurs. He used the game's Dino Bucks to buy upgrades and characters, according to The Telegraph, without realizing the Dino Bucks came from his dad's wallet.
"I was so mad,” Shugaa told the newspaper. “I'm 32 years old, why would Apple think I would be spending thousands of pounds on buying dinosaurs and upgrading a game? Why didn't they email me to check (that) I knew these payments were being made? I got nothing from them. How much longer would it have gone on for?”
Shugaa didn't realize his son knew his Apple ID, necessary to make purchases in the App Store, until he tried to pay suppliers for his carpet business in the United Kingdom, Crawley News reported. His card was declined and he contacted his bank.
"They put me through to the fraud team and they asked if I was aware 60-plus transactions had been made to iTunes," Shugaa told Crawley News. "The first was for £30.97 ($45.65) and there were all different costs going up to £58.98 ($86.93)."
Apple eventually agreed to give Shugaa a refund, according to the New York Daily News.
