What’s the deal with trash can on Tennessee sideline?

If you were watching Monday night’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game between Georgia Tech and Tennessee and wondered what the trash can labeled “Team 121” on the Volunteers' sideline was about, you’re not alone.

Several times during the ESPN broadcast, a Tennessee staffer was shown lifting the large gray trash can.

After the game, the staffer ran the trash can on the field to celebrate the Volunteers' 42-41 double-overtime win.

“Team 121” is assumed to reflect that this season’s Tennessee football team is the 121st in Volunteer history.

Why the trash can seems to be a piece of Tennessee's pagentry this season isn't clear, but Autumn Allison of the Knoxville News Sentinel made a guess.

Allison wrote that every time the defense created a turnover, a player would take the football and dunk it in the trash can.

Whatever the rationale behind the Vols newest sideline motivator, fans lined up to trash the idea:
