What’s the deal with trash can on Tennessee sideline?

If you were watching Monday night’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game between Georgia Tech and Tennessee and wondered what the trash can labeled “Team 121” on the Volunteers' sideline was about, you’re not alone.
Several times during the ESPN broadcast, a Tennessee staffer was shown lifting the large gray trash can.
After the game, the staffer ran the trash can on the field to celebrate the Volunteers' 42-41 double-overtime win.

“Team 121” is assumed to reflect that this season’s Tennessee football team is the 121st in Volunteer history.
Why the trash can seems to be a piece of Tennessee's pagentry this season isn't clear, but Autumn Allison of the Knoxville News Sentinel made a guess.
Allison wrote that every time the defense created a turnover, a player would take the football and dunk it in the trash can.
Whatever the rationale behind the Vols newest sideline motivator, fans lined up to trash the idea:

Not sure what's more Tennessee. That they have a trash can on their sideline or that they missed the dunk. pic.twitter.com/O6dWwNYUMJ

#ButchJones #Trashcan is unexplainable dumb. Think #JohnnyMajors ever thought about carrying around a trash can to away games? #GBO #VFL

Gonna be weird when three Tennessee players grab their coach and dunk him in that trash can.

Whoooooose idea was it for Tennessee to hold up a trash can on the sideline? The memes just write themselves

Somebody who beats Tennessee needs to steal the trash can and turn it into a rivalry trophy

Tennessee has a trash can to put their turnovers in. Maybe they should just do the right thing and put their entire program in it

When Tennessee is on defense, there is a trash can being held up on the sideline.
