Vinings resident Jenny Mitchell was planning to run a half-marathon in mid-July, but she decided the AJC Peachtree Road Race will be her last race before she gives birth to her son Oliver in two months.
An avid runner who has run the AJC Peachtree Road Race twice before, Mitchell’s pregnancy with her first child didn’t stop her from competing Tuesday.
“I wouldn’t say that (I’m a career runner),” Mitchell said. “I have a whole running group of people. My husband’s not a runner at all.”
Competitive running has been a part of Mitchell’s life for quite some time.
For seven years, Mitchell has run around Piedmont Park three to four days a week with her running group and has taken on the challenge of running a half-marathon every year. Although Mitchell is seven months pregnant, she didn’t plan for this year to be any different.
She previously planned to run the Napa-to-Sonoma Wine Country Half-Marathon in California on July 16, but decided the AJC Peachtree Road Race would be her last while pregnant.
“After this, it’s not going to happen. Ten (kilometers) is my max,” Mitchell said. “In one word, it’s exhausting. But as long as you do it before you obviously are pregnant, you feel good about it. I walked a lot.”
