Leonard Floyd, who might have generated the most buzz among the freshmen in Georgia’s preseason camp, underwent surgery Tuesday and is going to miss at least a few practices.
The 6-foot-4, 220-pound outside linebacker from Eastman suffered a fracture in his left hand on Monday and underwent surgery Tuesday morning. He’ll be out at least two days but should still be available to play in the opener against Clemson, UGA said.
Floyd is the third player at that position to suffer some sort of fracture on their left hand in the past two days. Starting outside linebacker James DeLoach and freshman outside linebacker Davin Bellamy incurred left-thumb fractures on Sunday and underwent surgery on Monday.
Floyd came to Georgia from Hargrave Military Academy prep school this summer and has been one of the head-turners in the Bulldogs’ preseason camp. Jordan Jenkins, who is slated to start at weakside outside linebacker, said Floyd has looked so good the first week of practice, “if I mess around he might even take my spot.”
Quarterback Hutson Mason talked about Floyd jumping more than 10 feet in the air to defelct one of his passes and raved at one play in which ran down a tailback from behind from the opposite side of the field. “It’s freaky,” Mason said of Floyd’s athletic ability. “It really is.”
Like the injuries that preceded his, Floyd’s availability for the opener against Clemson is not expected to be impacted. He will be unable to practice for at least two days and his hand will likely be protected with a cast encompassing all his fingers.
