Kennesaw State has interviewed at least three finalists for its head football coach position, including Georgia Tech assistants Brian Bohannon and Andy McCollum, according to a person familiar with the situation.
Athletic director Vaughn Williams declined to comment on the candidates, other than to say that “he feels very good and very confident about the process so far.”
Bohannon, quarterbacks and B-backs coach at Tech, declined to comment. McCollum, defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator, did not immediately return calls.
Williams set a timetable to make the hire by the end of March and acknowledged the school is on track to meet that deadline.
The finalists were interviewed by KSU’s search committee over the weekend. There may be as many as six finalists.
During the press conference in February when Kennesaw State announced it would start a football program to play the 2015 season, Williams said he hoped to hire a coach who knew the Georgia market, was a strong recruiter and could help students in the class room.
McCollum is from Marietta and played football at Marietta High School. He has more than 30 years of experience, including as head coach at Middle Tennessee State from 1999-2005, when he led the program’s transition from FCS to FBS. He came to Georgia Tech in 2010 after three years at N.C. State.
Bohannon, a Griffin native, played at Georgia. He has coached since 1996, working at Georgia Southern (1997-2001), Navy (2002-07) and Georgia Tech (2008-present).
