Monday’s combined Falcons and Titans training camp was somewhat of a reunion for Tennessee head coach Ken Whisenhunt.
“I played for the Falcons about three decades ago, wow that’s a long time,” Whisenhunt said.
Whisenhunt reunited with a few former Falcons teammates, including former Falcons quarterback David Archer. Archer and Whisenhunt played together in Atlanta for three seasons—from 1985 to 1987.
“I got to see him so that’s pretty neat,” Whisenhunt said.
He noted the Falcons have upgraded the facilities a “tiny bit” since his 1988 departure from the team.
The Georgia Tech alumnus grew up in Augusta, about two and a half hours away from Flowery Branch. Whisenhunt said he didn’t get a chance to visit family this trip but he plans on doing so later this month. The Titans will be back in Georgia to play the Falcons in a preseason game on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Georgia Dome.
“It was such a quick trip, in and out, so I didn’t,” Whisenhunt said on visiting family. “There’ll be time though, probably in a couple of weeks when we come back.”
One part of Whisenhunt pseudo homecoming he wasn’t so happy with was the few scuffles that broke out between the two teams throughout the two and a half hour practice. One scuffle in the first 10 minutes of practice nearly brought the entirety of both teams off the sides and onto the field.
“Thought it might come but it came early and after that everybody settled down,” Whisenhunt said. “I didn’t like our guys jumping off sides as much, that’s something that we’ve got to clean up but this is why we do this. We get a chance to see this. They’re a little more amped up and then, that going to happen. So this is a good message to sell for games—can’t do that in games.”
