Younghoe Koo kicked three field goals, including the game-winning 26-yarder with 1:56 remaining, to lift Georgia Southern to a 23-21 victory over visiting Chattanooga on Saturday.

Jerick McKinnon (Sprayberry) rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown, and William Banks (Augusta Christian) added 86 yards for the Eagles (3-1, 1-1 Southern Conference).

Koo kicked a 40-yard field goal with 13:35 left in the game to cut Chattanooga’s lead to 21-20. He also had a 32-yarder in the second quarter.

Georgia Southern scored two first-quarter touchdowns on McKinnon’s run and a 10-yard run from Montay Crockett.

The Eagles rushed for 376 yards on 62 carries and didn’t complete either of their two pass attempts.

Jacob Huesman led Chattanooga (2-2, 0-1) with 148 yards rushing, including a 51-yard touchdown run.

Mercer 31, Drake 17: John Russ accounted for three touchdowns, and host Mercer forced seven turnovers to win its inaugural Pioneer Football League game.

Russ (Mill Creek) scored on runs of 44 yards and 1 yard and threw for 172 yards as the Bears (4-0, 1-0) defeated Drake, the two-time defending conference co-champion.

“It was just a wonderful effort by our kids,” Mercer coach Bobby Lamb said. “They’re learning every day, and the amazing thing is they think they can beat anybody.”

Mercer had four interceptions, recovered three fumbles and had three sacks.

Russ’ 62-yard touchdown pass to Josh Jones (Thomson) gave the Bears a 31-17 lead with 7:18 remaining.

Payton Usher (Northgate) rushed for 90 yards, and Jones finished with three catches for 68 yards.

West Georgia 31, Shorter 14: Seth Hinsley (Norcross) rushed for a career-high 134 yards and a touchdown to lead the visiting Wolves, who scored the final 24 points.

Hinsley scored on a 72-yard run, Eric Bridges (Troup) returned a fumble 58 yards for score and Austin Trainor threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Joey Eliezer (North Paulding) for West Georgia (3-1, 1-0 Gulf South Conference).

Carlos Hutton (Carrollton) intercepted two passes, and the Wolves recovered two fumbles. Thomas Dover had two of West Georgia’s six sacks.

Bradley Moon (Salem) rushed for 67 yards for Shorter (0-4, 0-2).
