The Boston Red Sox announced Wednesday manager John Farrell has been fired after five seasons.

The team announced the decision on Twitter.

Farrell took over for Bobby Valentine as manager in 2013 and was under contract through the 2018 season.

Farrell, Red Sox pitching coach from 2007-2010, recorded a 432-378 record as manager.
