Atlanta is bidding to host the semifinals of the 2015 Gold Cup soccer tournament.
The games would be played in the Georgia Dome in July.
The Dome hosted the quarterfinals of the tournament, which features 12 national teams from North America, Central American and the Caribbean, in 2013. The U.S., Mexico and Canada have automatically qualified for next year’s event.
The tournament will be held between July 7-26 and 10 cities will serve as hosts.
More than 54,000 tickets were sold for last year’s games at the Georgia Dome in which Panama defeated Cuba 6-1 and Mexico defeated Trinidad and Tobago 1-0. The back-to-back games set an attendance record for soccer in the Dome, but it was a mark that fell earlier this year when more than 68,000 tickets were sold for Mexico’s 0-0 tie against Nigeria.
Atlanta is becoming one of the hot spots for international soccer in recent years with the Dome having hosted several games.
An MLS team owned by Arthur Blank will begin play in the new stadium downtown in 2017.
