In the 16th minute of Tuesday night’s match against Trinidad and Tobago, U.S. Men’s National Team defender Omar Gonzalez scored an own goal.

United States’ goalkeeper Tim Howard was unable to stop the mistake as Trinidad and Tobago went up 1-0 early in the match.

The U.S. was down 2-0 at the half and scored a goal in the second half, but it was too little, too late. The U.S. Men’s National Team was disqualified with a 2-1 loss.

"Just want to say sorry to the fans -- all the U.S. fans that were pulling for us, that wanted to go to Russia and that believed in us,” Gonzalez said after the game, according to Soccer America. “We let down an entire nation today."
