COLUMBUS -- Buford won twice at the GHSA championships, advancing to Friday’s winner’s bracket finals with a shot at their fourth consecutive state championship.

In Class AA, Buford used home runs in both games from Lexi Overstreet, whose two-run shot in the sixth inning broke open the Lady Wolves’ 6-1 win over Union County in the second round.

“I was expecting a rise ball, and she came inside,” Overstreet said of her homer off Union County’s Angie Hughes. “I just knew I kind of had to help my team out.”

Buford, going for its fourth consecutive title in Class AA, got a clutch performance from pitcher Melissa Dickie, who struggled with her control before wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam in a 4-1 win over Jeff Davis. Dickie then retired 14 consecutive batters before Lindsey Wilcox’s home run in the sixth got Jeff Davis on the board.

“I guess I was a little bit nervous,” Dickie said, “but then I realized I just needed to pitch.”
