North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire said in preseason that he thought Peachtree Ridge had the best team in Class AAAAA. That was before Lowndes beat Peachtree Ridge 51-17.

"It's playing out like one of those years where eight or nine teams could win this thing," Sphire said this week. "Maybe it's who gets hot and who's healthiest. I still think you can throw that Peachtree Ridge game out. It sounds like in the first five minutes, it's over. Lowndes, when they're hot, they've unbelievable, but then they turn around and get beat by Northside. Is Northside that good? Maybe they've been overlooked."

Who are the other five or six teams that could win it?

Sphire said the team that wins the championship could be a team that's not on the radar at the moment.

"I look at Grayson, Peachtree Ridge, could be us, Stephenson, M.L. King," Sphire said. "There are a bunch of teams like Lassiter, Roswell and Walton that aren't getting publicity. McEachern is playing lights out. I haven't even mentioned Newnan.

"When [Newnan] beat us last year, I thought they were as good as Lowndes when Lowndes beat us in the final [in 2007]," Sphire said. "And they got the war daddy at safety [Alec Ogletree] coming back. They're good too."
