Roswell on Friday announced the hiring of record-setting Lee County offensive coordinator Jonathan Thompson as head football coach.

Lee County (13-1) lost to eventual Class 5A champion Milton in the GHSA playoff semifinals. Lee scored 543 points in the regular season, the fourth-most in GHSA history, and 717 points for the season overall, seventh-most in history.

Lee County quarterback Weston Bryan passed for 34 touchdowns and rushed for 29, nearly becoming the first player in GHSA history to have 30 of each. Bryan, who signed with Georgia Southern, was a three-year starter who made huge gains each season under Thompson.

Thompson will be inheriting one of the state’s best dual-threat quarterbacks, Trey Smith, who passed for 23 touchdowns and rushed for 18 last season.

Thompson has run Lee County’s offenses the past six seasons. He has also worked on staffs at Harris County and Upson-Lee.

Roswell was 9-3 last season, losing games to Class 6A finalists Milton and Hughes and to Class 6A power Buford.

Former coach Chris Prewitt resigned to become head coach at Dalton.
