3-pointers rain at Mountain View, Mt. Pisgah

Three players – two of them on the same team – each hit eight 3-pointers in games last weekend. Brittany Holmes made eight 3's en route to a 35-point performance for Mountain View in a 65-60 loss to Eastside on Friday. The same night, Mt. Pisgah junior guard Hank Shaw used his eight 3-pointers to score 28 points in the Patriots' 79-61 victory against Excel Christian. On Saturday, Shaw's teammate, sophomore guard Brian Ginty, made eight and scored 26 points in a 73-38 victory against Galloway.

Girls

Stall tactics by Winder-Barrow coach Brenda Hill and Heritage coach Dave LaBarrie resulted in a scoreless second half in Winder-Barrow's 13-9 victory last Saturday. Hill instructed her team to hold the ball for all but the final 20 seconds of the third quarter. LaBarrie countered by having his team play keep away until the final two minutes of the game, but neither team could manage a point before the final buzzer. ... Fayette County senior forward Anma Onyeuku hit the 1,000-point plateau and head coach John Strickland earned his 100th career victory for the Tigers (18-3), who are ranked No.1 in Class AAAA. Both hope the team can clear that final hurdle this year. Fayette County has lost the previous two state championship games to Southwest DeKalb, currently ranked No. 3. ... Angelika Lundy, a senior guard/forward, is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds to help tiny Emanuel County Institute remain unbeaten (16-0). No opponent has come within 12 points of the Bulldogs, who are ranked No. 10 in Class A. ... Rome senior forward Mauri Wells and Northwest Whitfield junior Quaneisha McCurty, two of the best post players in Region 7-AAAA, are headed for a showdown for the region title in the season finale Feb. 9  at Northwest. Rome (19-0) is ranked No. 2; Northwest (17-2) is  No. 4.

Lakeside senior guard Shelton Strickland has topped the career 1,000-point mark. He is averaging 22 points per game, second in DeKalb County. He scored 31 on Tuesday in a 90-81 upset of Tucker, which was ranked No. 2 in Class AAAA. ... Therrell senior forward Trevin Brown has turned into a double-double machine for the Panthers. Brown has recorded five of them, including a 17-point, 12-rebound performance in a 54-51 victory against Washington last Friday. He had 24 points and 13 rebounds in a 73-71 loss to Carver on Tuesday. ... LaGrange senior center Jamius Gunsby helped the Grangers, ranked No. 3 in Class AAA, remain unbeaten (20-0) with a 22-point performance in a hard-fought 53-49 victory against Kendrick on Tuesday. ... Northeast Macon (19-1), ranked No. 2 in Class AA, hopes to lock up the Region 4-AA regular season title with a victory at Monticello on Tuesday.
